The mystery related to the strange death of Edger Allan Poe
in 1849 will be uncovered through this book
In fact, now I'm in chapter 15, and I've been enjoying every page.
This book contains 35 chapters.
One of my friends has started to read it, but she couldn't continue.
She says, " The language is a bit difficult for me to finish it."
I do agree with her, yet I want to know what happened to him.
I advise you to buy it. It'll improve your language

Hibp039 , it's a nice topic , I love reading very much , especially novels pb189

http://images.alibris.com/isbn/9780194230810.gif

currently I'm reading Cry Freedom By John Briery ,
it's a great novelpb030pb189.

They said Steave Biko was a man of violence ; then why did he talk of peace ?
They said he wanted revolution ; so why did he talk of friendship ? They said he died of hunger;
why was his body broken and bruised ?

This is the story of a man's fight with the government of South Africa.
It is a story for all people who prefer trust to lies .It is the story of all people who cry Freedom . and who are not afraid to die.

I felt some strange emotions when i was reading :sm3:.
By The Way the novel has got a film , but it's old , they made it in 1982.

, I couldn't find an online link for the novel , because I'm reading the old edition from my dady's library..

well , I wanna read some great novels , can anyone give an advice for some of them ?

"A Walk to Remember"
http://z.about.com/d/bestsellers/1/0/p/6/-/-/a_walk_to_remember.jpg

It is a romantic novel. i really enjoy every single word when i read it

quote from the book
There are moments when I wish I could roll back the clock
and take all the sadness away, but I have the feeling that
if I did, the joy would be gone as well. So I take the memories
as they come, accepting them all, letting them
.guide me whenever I can

of course
i will come back when i finish reading it :)

pb189 THE SOUND OF LANGUAGE pb189

http://www.damemagazine.com/uploads/wysiwygpro/language.jpg

it's a tragic novle talking about a widow girl escaping the turmoil and heartbreak of war-torn Kabul, Raihana settles with distant relatives in the strange, cold, damp country of Denmark. Homesick and heartbroken, Raihana bravely attempts to start a new life, trying hard not to ponder the fate of the husband who was taken prisoner by the Taliban and never heard from again.

Soon after arriving, Raihana finds herself in a language school, struggling to learn Danish, which she thinks sounds like the buzzing of bees. To improve her speaking skills, Raihana apprentices herself to Gunnar, a recent widower who is steadily withdrawing from the world around him, even neglecting the bee colonies he worked so hard to cultivate with his late wife. Over the course of the bee season, Raihana and Gunnar forge an unlikely relationship, despite the disapproval of their respective friends and relatives.

A story of four women (Kay, Jesse,Alex ,and Maria),
who once were classmates in the same school of art...
they were friends at first but they
became kind of enemies until they
separated each in her own way:(

After many years, they got an invitation
for the principal's birthday party
which they can't miss .
they don't want to gather again but in
the same time each one wants to know
what happened to the rest!;)

within the chapters of the novel the author
mentions the story of each woman and her
experience in love , family, business, and so on

I was drawn into the book, and I couldn't put it down once I picked
it up. pb189What a wonderful novel to great novelist Khaled Hosseini

The novel around 51 chapters, The Story Covers 3 decades of anti-soviet civil war & Taliban tyranny through the life of two women Laila& Mariam, which essential theme is around love (of family, of children, of wife, of lovers, of parents, of friends and of a community
)
It also shows the evil and good of human beings through the torn country Afghanistan.
The final few chapters will touch your heart . . It's the type of book that will linger in your memories for some time:(pb189pb189.

First it came out as a movie or documentary mainly from professors ,doctors..etc
men & women . I like the book more than the moviepb189.
honestly At the First & Second chapter You will get confused then you will begin to understand what they are talking about:confused:

I highly recommend it to whom would like to change every aspect of your pb058life in health, wealth ,happiness.

Back

"A Walk to Remember"
I have just finished reading it

'pb189It was 'marvelous

,If you want to know what real love looks like
.you should get the book and read it with all of your heart

It included 13 chapters
'the language was simple and 'very moving
pb189the writer used a lot of adjectives
with some ironic expressions that made you smile or even laugh

The writer said before the story begun
'Firts you will smile, and then you will cry - don't say you haven't been warned'
:sm1:that's exactly what happened to me

[The Story]
It was about a teenager boy
,and as a teenager you know, he only cared about showing off
.making fun of others and hate perfect people
Actually, the story was very close to the real life events
.this made it more and more interesting

,I think the climax was at the end of chapter eight
,when I reached it
.pb030I couldn't stop myself from continuing reading it

[Some quotes]

she was in other words the kind of girl
who made the rest of us look bad and when ever she glanced my way, I
couldn't help but feel guilty, even though I hadn't done anything wrong

*

'you have to promise that you won't fall in love with me'
.....I knew she was kidding by the way she laughed
Jamie had a pretty good sence of humor

*

:there's one thing I still haven't told you
.I know believe by the way that miracles can happen

***

pb189I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did

The Screlet Letter
by Nathaniel Hawthorne
here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0142437263/bookrags)

on of my favorite 19th century-collection

''Based upon an iterpretation of American ways
of life , an exposition of American attitude in its portryal of sin

Hester falls in love with the priest and commits adultery.
She is punished by having a red letter on her cloth
so people would recognize her sin

She gave birth to a sweet little girl and names
her pearl. The name itself has a connotation as it is very symbolic

Though the novel is about forbidden love and sin, it is one
of the best love stories ever
I don't recommend anyone to watch te movie.
It brings shame to the novel!

I too much like to pass on the part that has this quote :
'Love ,whether newly born , or aroused from
a deathlike slumber , must always create a sunshine filling the heart so full ofradiance that it overflows upon the outward world '

hmm let me see ,,
I have read this love novel ,,
it's an old one .. and a famous one also ,,

Gone With the Wind

many ppl liked the movie of this novel ,, but i don't know -_- ,, i haven't seen the movie yet
.
.

hmmm i have also Read ,,
La Miserable
http://denishuet33.free.fr/images/msgPub/les_miserables.jpg
i saw the movie ,, But thank god i read the novel be4
coz i didn't like the movie at all >_<
but the Story is Just Fantastic ,, I loved everything about it
i cried for the end ,, it's a touchy novel ,, The novel focuses on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. It examines the nature of law and grace, and expounds upon the history of France, architecture of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. The story is historical fiction because it contains factual, historic events, including the Paris Uprising ,,

there's an arabic version if u don't wanna read it N english

Little Women
By: Louisa May Alcott

Download (http://manybooks.net/titles/alcottloetext96lwmen13.html)

This popular novel concerns the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the American Civil War, and was based on Alcott's own experiences as a child in Concord, Massachusetts. After much demand, Alcott wrote a sequel, Good Wives, which is often published together with Little Women as if it were a single work. Good Wives picks up three years after the events in the last chapter of Little Women, and includes characters and events often felt by fans to be essential to the story.

I can simply say that this is the best Science Fiction Novel that has been written.

Not because of Action, it is very deep, it has Aliens but not as you would think, they come to earth offering peace but in return for complete obedience from humans..

they give humans the best technologies there is, no more disease or
wars since humans have surrendered that too..
everything seems to be working fine for Humanity
but, what of the Children?

I read this novel more than three years ago and I just recalled it this morning..no reason why did the title pass by my mind but anyways I
miss my book that was never retruned to me...:(

The story takes place during 10 days of the life of Miranda , a timid dress designer who travels to China in a business trip concerning her field. When she arrives at the Beijing airport, Miranda is overwhelmed by the chaos, but unexpectedly, a Chinese man secures a taxi for her and accompanies her to her hotel. His name is Yuan Li, the son of a Chinese mother and an American serviceman. He offers to help Miranda during her visit and by time they fall for each other.. I forgot to mention that Miranda is at her late thirties I guess .. She has two children and so does Li..I think he is in his fifties..so their affair is not a rash or teenage stuff yet it is not rathional due to their circumistances...I loved the details of this relathionship..esepcially the ending part..so grwon up so realistic

http://www.monsterup.com/upload/127068929811.gif
What is it about

David Pelzer as a little boy has been severely abused by his alcoholic mother who first isolated him from the rest of the family, and referred to him as"an it" .Then she inflicted on him episodes of horrifying torture like stabbing him & burning him over gas stove. The story tells about the little boy's courage to survive and finding his way out from such a living hell which supposed to be home
.......
The book is incredibly inspirational
and, it's nonfictional, which means the author is presenting his own experience directly to me as a reader, and that's why i liked it even more. I've decided to start reading in the break -after one week from now- but i couldn't resist and now i'm in chapter six

In shaa Allah I'll be back after I finish

By Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin

It's an inspiring journey of the writer Mr.Mortenson when
he tried to promote peace in poor countries
The story starts when he attempts to climb a mountain
in Pakistan, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities in central Asia.
Inspiring story with simple language, not to mention
that the story is full of his jorney pictures which keeps you following eagerly
p.s. recommended for teachers to be inspired

I read this Hugo's masterpiece I loved each line of it. It talks about the struggle of that age. I read long time ago so I dont remeber much. But I know I liked it and Hugo became one of the favorites. k

A Passage to India
written by : E.M. Forster

It's a great novel talks about the struggle between the indians and the English during Colonialism. It was a novel that I had to study during my college days and after graduation I felt like reading it again, and I may read it for the third time . But I gotta warn u the language and the stream of the ideas are not clear , u may need some explaination to understand it fully. k

The secret

I read it due to Boredom but once i started reading it , something made me continue to read it , when i finished it i decided to start practicing what the books says
and what shocked me the most :|
is that it actually worked :|
it's like magic :| i mean i did what they say "repeat what you want in your mind , picture your self having it ..etc" in Friday and by Sunday i had what i want it , when i had it i didn't remember the book until later , and when i wanted to want something else so i can have it like i had my first thing , i started thinking is it ok to do this? you know asking stuff from book ? i know that it's just positive thinking and all that , but still , something inside me told me to stop! am i wrong?

anywho i'm new with the whole english books , i'm in the middle of the kite runner and so far so good , once i finish it i'll post a replay
great work you guys ;)

i bought it and read it , also i have the original vedio talking about it
but do know what is the result ?

the idea itself encourage me not follow it , what happen is i have spent more than one month thinking of the secret of our Islam

the secret is in the saying of Allah when He says , he is in the place of what we think about him
if we think He will do that good thing to us , he will do it
if we think that he will do that bad thing to us , he will do it
so we have think of positive things not believe on what the writer wrote

the only thing i can say it , thanks Allah for guiding me for this book not because it is true , but because it makes me rethinking of what is really true.

Can You Keep a Secret

http://www.belindadao.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/can_you_keep_a_secret-_sophie_kinsella_mass_market.jpg

I am really proud of myself that I became abel to finish that book and not feeling bored at all .. it is fun and light book that you can finish in no time ... it's a comedy romance and the writer has a great sense of humor .. and the most impotent thing for me its easy language ..

the plot is :

what if a girl revel all the intimate secrets to a stranger than it turns out that the stranger is not stranger any more ... I don't want to burn the story for you guys so I am not telling much ... I hope you enjoy it all

P.S

I saw some people here post a really tough novels and old classical once ... its the type of novels that we might study at college and some of them are really old ...

the alchemist is tough to understand in arabic ... so I am not planing to read it in english ...

I really hope that you post some thing more easier and more modern that will satisfy a great number of readers ..

and thank you all for your sharing bp039

I'm in the fifth chapter pb189 the first thing struck me about the book
is the beauty of the description, n i've kept on rereading many pargraphs several times b4 i could move on
.........
[QUOTE]
"I didn't call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone - he stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness."

great ideapb189

I just finished wicked lovely by Milessa marr
it is a series of 3 books i guess
or there might be more didnt comeing out

the first one is
http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1289174089l/305234.jpg

it is about a girl who can see fairies
and she dosent like the fact that she can
and she learns at the begging of the book that she is destined to become their queen ( the Summer Queen )
because the the ( Summer King ) sew her in his dreams
so the book is about her fighting this idea

and this is just the 1st book in the series
and i am about to read the second one which is Ink exchange

but i am not sure if i want to read it right away
because as much as i liked the story i didnt like how it was written , the author's way of describing is confusing
and I like clear describing of every detail especially in supernatural books

so i might read another book and get back to this series later

Girl meets boy..
Girl loses boy..
Girl gets boy back

…sort of

Ava can’t see him or touch him, unless she’s dreaming. She can’t hear his voice, except for the faint whispers in her mind. Most would think she’s crazy, but she knows he’s here.

Jackson. The boy Ava thought she’d spend the rest of her life with. He’s back from the dead, as proof that love truly knows no bounds.

Back again this time with a book i read when I was 16 and since then has been one of my all time favorites , like the cover says it is pretty unusual in a good way :D
it's a pretty old book considered a classic . published in the 50s so the language is kinda hard for a beginner .
rating this book i would give it a 10/10

It was smooth and simple but really great. The description of the battles
makes me feel the smell of the blood

The Arabic version is available at Jarir & the English version can be downloaded from goodreads.com

this book was short but very complicated..you will feel every chapter you read and you won't get bored .. I'm pretty sure i need to read it again.. the language used was way above my level :sm12:

and i'v also noticed that you guys were discussing the book "the secrete" which is really no secrete :D i bought the book in 2006 when it was a big hit ...started reading it more than once :Deach time i couldn't go past the 24th page or so ... i just hated it but i really don't like self help books anyways:sm4:

rainaroma have mentioned a walk to remember by Nickolas sparks
it was a very short and sweet book.. but something was off about it.. and i have only come to realize that when i have already finished reading it pb036 but it's a good book in general.. talking about a teenage love story between totally different people ..

i have lots of books ..some are mentioned in this thread and some aren't.. i did not read a lot of them though :(

Thirteen Reasons Why

by Jay Asher (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/569269.Jay_Asher)

'On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.

There's nothing special about this book .It's like a random story to me .
The plot is really poor and the reasons are not deep or convincing to me.Every individual point is
trifle .And even if we put them together , they still won't form a serious reason for committing suicide .
I think this book suits parents who have teens more than anyone else .The message is :
Never underestimate the emotional side of teenagers .Any slight incident can make a deep impact and a pile of
them could lead anyone to commit suicide .

I think people who loved this book are either teens who really tried committing suicide
or sensitive people who would dwell on every trifle trouble in their lives
I won't underestimate their enduring and going through experiences that might appear to be
trifle to me but even if these situations looked that difficult they will never belong to
the serious-level of hardship

1984
By George Orwell, 1949

Main Characters

Winston Smith - The 39 year old protagonist of the novel whose rebellion against Big Brother and the Party and love for Julia is completely wiped out by O’Brian at the Ministry of Love.

Julia - Member of the Junior Anti-Sex league who becomes Winston’s secret lover and fellow rebel.

O’Brian - Member of the Inner-Party who learns that Winston has rebellious tendencies and sets a trap for him over the course of 7 years and ultimately destroys him.

Big Brother - Mysterious omnipresent figurehead who is the embodiment of all the ideals of the party.

Minor Characters

Emmanuel Goldstein - Leader of the rebels and designated enemy of the citizens.

Mr. Charrington - Secret Member of the thought police who owns and operates an antique store and rents a room to Julia and Winston as a trap for O’Brian.

Settings

Oceania - One of the three totalitarian superpowers that rule the world using censorship and pure terror.

Mr. Charrington’s rented room - Winston and Julia’s secret hideaway where they come to make love and hide from the telescreens and constant watch of the Party.

Ministry of Love - A rehabilitation center which uses torture and brainwashing technique in order to completely conform its prisoners into the thinking and beliefs of the party only to be later killed, sent to forced labor camps, or even released back into society.

Plot

In 1984, Winston Smith lives in London which is part of the country Oceania. The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Oceania, and both of the others, is a totalitarian society led by Big Brother, which censors everyone’s behavior, even their thoughts. Winston is disgusted with his oppressed life and secretly longs to join the fabled Brotherhood, a supposed group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government. Winston meets Julia and they secretly fall in love and have an affair, something which is considered a crime. One day, while walking home, Winston encounters O’Brian, an inner party member, who gives Winston his address. Winston had exchanged glances with O’Brian before and had dreams about him giving him the impression that O’Brian was a member of the Brotherhood. Since Julia hated the party as much as Winston did, they went to O’Brian’s house together where they were introduced into the Brotherhood. O’Brian is actually a faithful member of the Inner-Party and this is actually a trap for Winston, a trap that O’Brian has been cleverly setting for seven years. Winston and Julia are sent to the Ministry of Love which is a sort of rehabilitation center for criminals accused of thoughtcrime. There, Winston was separated from Julia, and tortured until his beliefs coincided with those of the Party. Winston denounces everything he believed him, even his love for Julia, and was released back into the public where he wastes his days at the Chestnut Tree drinking gin.

Symbols

Scarlet Sash - emblem of the Junior Anti-Sex league which all its members wear. Actually, it is camouflage for Julia and other members of the party to give them the appearance of celibacy while they are actually promiscuous.

Room 101 - the final stage of the torture and rehab at the ministry of love. The room symbolizes and consists of the one thing each person hates and fears most. It symbolizes the fearfulness and helplessness each person experiences when faced with his greatest fear.

Chess pieces - the chess pieces symbolizes the players in the great political game. The white pieces are the Party and shows the way they never lose.

Style

Orwell’s prose is very descriptive and informative. He portrays terrifying images and conveys horrifying truths in a calm voice that contrasts effectively with the true horrors of his message. Foreshadowing and suspense is used to heighten this exciting novel.

Dominant Philosophy

In 1984, George Orwell warns of the terrifying dangers that man may create for himself in his quest for a utopian society. It warns that people might believe that everyone must become slaves to the government in order to have an orderly society, but at the expense of the freedom of the people.

Quotes

“WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” The two minutes hate ended with this message which is the slogan of the Party.

“The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.” The narrator describes the way the party manipulates history by changing all documents referring to the history.

“Nothing in the world was so bad as physical pain. In the face of pain there are no heroes, no heroes, he thought over and over as he writhed on the floor, clutching uselessly his disabled left arm.” Winston winces at the pain of the blow to his elbow, and also at the realization at he his helpless in the face of pain.

“You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him; you must love him.” O’Brian tells this to Winston as he begins the final stage of Winston’s rehab into submission of the Party.

GOTH (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3678413-goth)

''A notebook that leads to murder - a refrigerator filled with hands... a pit of dead dogs... an accidental suicide... a boy buried alive - and where two teenagers linked by an obsession with murder and torture explore the recesses of humanity's dark side.''

It was a compulsive read ,yet I didn't like how the plot of each crime was very short .The brutal parts were intriguing but the way each puzzle was solved was brief and somehow weird .I liked that he was obsessed with the idea of killing Morino and how he wanted to have her wrist !

Love in a Torn Land:Joanna of Kurdistan
The True Story of a Freedom Fighter's Escape from Iraqi Vengeance

by Jean Sasson

Best-selling author Jean Sasson has traveled to many corners of the world and befriended many fascinating women whose stories cry out to be told. The true story of Joanna al-Askari Hussain, a Kurdish woman living in Iraq, is the life of a woman who falls in love and lives in terrifying danger while she pursues freedom for the Kurdish people in the extremes of a confusing war. In Jean Sasson's book, Love in a Torn Land, you will meet a woman who might be the heroine of an adventure novel or of a tender romance, surviving against all odds. This is Jean Sasson at her best!

Before I began this book, I did not know what a Kurd was. But I came to admire the spirit of the Kurdish people and their unfathomable faith in their right to survive in the harsh environments of war, suppression, and genocide, The story follows a family's struggles in war-torn Iraq.
The story includes heartbreaking tales of torture and loss, warm sharings of people reaching out to comfort others, and harrowing narratives of a people's struggle to survive. Against all odds, this brave woman survives, determined to live the life she wanted, no matter the cost.

In this book, Joanna tells us of the bombings of Baghdad and the Northern Iraq mountains. She must learn the crucial lesson "that whatever one might be doing here, half the mind will not be focusing on the task at hand, but instead on the sounds and sights from the skies." She applies this lesson as she listens for the shrill whistling resonance of shells or for the noisy roar of an airplane or helicopter engine while she is preparing a meager breakfast, often consisting only of rice. She manages narrow escapes in treacherous places, only to find herself in an area targeted for race-eliminating scourges. She may suffer the heartbreak of the loss of loved ones, is often on the brink of starvation, is poisoned and blinded by gas, but she never loses her spirit and will to survive. Even a poor shelter, crawling with scorpions, with no electricity, no running water, and no toilets, seems like heaven.

One of my favourite books, I've read it twice

here are some more books
:D

(1)
http://www.gumboot.co.nz/images/fashion-babylon-book-gallery-1.jpg

ok this book was a waste of time pb093 except for the few fashion facts that you can read anywhere online the book was boring and i think it took me a month to finish it !!
for those who are still interested (i doubt anybody is at this point :D) its mainly about the struggle of a new designer to prove herself and stuff :D that's all i have to say about this book bp039
on the other hand there are some other books from the same author which are supposed to be better (hotel babylon-airport babylon..) i have not read them though so you might wanna check them out before you buy them:D

(2)
http://movies.popcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/diary-of-a-wimpy-kid-movie.jpg

there is more than one book in the same series but i'v only read the first one..the words are easy and the story is funny ..it's about a typical American kid's life in middle school :D and it has lots of cute pictures :D highly recommended for beginners specially those who do not like reading.. but i don't think people who really love reading will enjoy reading more than one book from this series bp039

ok the harry potter books pb189:D my only regret is that i wasn't one of those crazy fans waiting for k.j rowling to publish a new book every time i finish the last one:D i bet it would be a great feeling .. but that's my problem .. i tend to dislike anything that gets that much publicity :D plus i have read 14 pages of one of the books long ago and i didn't really like it.
i actually started reading the book last year when the last harry potter movie was out and all my friends wanted to see it so i was like fine but let me read the books first :D and i did read the first 3 books in one week and it was a real magical world and all pb189:D but do NOT do that otherwise you will get bored of the same idea again and again and you will not finish all books.. exactly like i did .. and i didn't finish them up to this day :D
highly recommended for beginners as well as people who love fiction but with at least a 1 month gap in between books :D

6)
http://images.wikia.com/twilightsaga/images/3/3c/Book_jacket_of_Twilight.jpeg

ok now this book proves my publicity theory mentioned above :D boring slow stupid a total waste of time and energy pb093 only read the first part but iv purchased the collector's edition with all 4 books :'( stupid i know !!

highly recommended for teenagers and romantic people who don't really care about the story arc :D

i still have many books so wait for another review pb094

My Chicken’s On the Internet

My chicken’s on the Internet.
She surfs the web all day.
I’ve tried to stop her browsing
but, so far, there’s just no way.
She jumps up on the mouse,
and then she flaps around like mad
to click on every hyperlink
and every pop-up ad.

She plays all sorts of chicken games,
She messages her folks.
She watches chicken videos
and forwards chicken jokes.

She writes a blog for chickens
and she uploads chicken pics.
She visits chicken chat rooms
where she clucks about her chicks.

I wouldn’t mind so much
except my keyboard’s now a wreck.
She hasn’t learned to type yet;
she can only hunt and peck.

what a great feeling,, waking up in the first day of vacation. where you got absolutely nothing to worry aboutpb095

however,, here are some books I read recently
(and they are the first three English books I read)

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7350/aaaaci0.jpg

who moved my cheese?

a book about how to deal with change in your life..

very simple English.. the book is divided into three parts..introduction and conclusion are about a conversation between friends about how the benefited from the story.. which is about two little people and two mice who live in a maze and look for cheese

you can refer to the cheese as anything in your life..your goals, your job, your dream.

Our Iceberg is Melting

this one is also about how to deal with change

it's a story about penguins pb189:D .. and how they reacted when they discovered that there iceberg is melting..

Its English is very simple as well

and you'll love it

http://movies.popcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/diary-of-a-wimpy-kid-movie.jpg

since I am not used to read books..the first two took me about a month to finish reading them

but this one took me only two days:D.. nothing described it better than HILARIOUS

I strongly recommend this to everyone especially those who don't like reading much .. as Pin-up girl said..

The Self-sabotage Cycle:
Why We Repeat Behaviors That Create Hardships and Ruin Relationships
by Stanley Rosner, Patricia Hermes

Overview

A 12-year-old boy vows he will never do to his future family what his father did by leaving the boy, his sister and mother. Yet, 30 years later, the boy now a man leaves his own family. A young woman who's broken off an abusive relationship is now attracted to the same kind of personality in a potential boyfriend. And an attorney who grew up with an impossible-to-please father takes a job in a firm where the boss thinks praise is never productive. These are the kind of repetitive cycles that Stanley Rosner has seen time and again in his practice across 40 years as a clinical psychologist. A past president of the Connecticut Psychological Association, Rosner examines in this book whether there is for some people a compulsion to repeat self-destructive acts, and what the foundation for that compulsion might be, as well as how it can be changed to afford better, happier living.

I'd been taught a lot of stuff in high school that I hardly remember anymore or will ever make use of in the future. I wish somehow this book were one of the mandatory reads back then..

I'm not a book person; I don't find what people have to say in 200 pages or more, interesting, but this book had me glued to my seat.
I think some of Holden Caulfield is in me. his sarcasm, depressed way of looking at the world and and his disgust by human behavior, all I can relate to very much.

Actually, I'm fond of reading in general, but since I'm working nowadays on the Chinese American writer Amy Tan, I choose her bestselling novel The Joy Luck Club. The novel is mainly about four Chinese immigrant mothers and four American-born daughters. The four Chinese American immigrant families start a club known as the joy luck in which they used to gather to play the Chinese game of Mahjong and feast on Chinese food. As they play Mahjong, the old women remember stories about the past and lament the barriers that separate them from their daughters. The book is really very interesting and exciting

The Devil and Miss Prym

I finally removed this book from the "later shelf". I like the kind of themes that depict the conflict between good and evil and how one of them would always prevail, depending on each individual's control and choice. But the plot of the Devil and Miss Prym was way religious and in a preaching style. Some parts seemed to be unnecessary and I got lost many times. Character development was weak and even predictable. The novel is still rich with memorable great quotes, though.

Why do we cry at the movies? What is the best way to manage destructive feelings such as jealousy? Although emotions pervade our lives, their nature, causes, and effects have only recently been studied by social scientists and philosophers. Despite growing scientific interest in the subject, empirical findings have not yet caught up with our intuitive knowledge. In this book Aaron Ben-Ze'ev carries out what he calls "a careful search for general patterns in the primeval jungle of emotions." In an engaging, informal style he draws on a variety of theoretical approaches and popular sources to produce a coherent account of emotions in all their subtlety. All of the ideas are illustrated with examples drawn from everyday life.

The book is organized into two parts. The first presents an overall conceptual framework for understanding emotions. It looks at the typical characteristics and components of emotions, distinguishes emotions from other affective phenomena, classifies the emotions, and covers such related issues as emotional intelligence, regulating emotions, and emotions and morality. The second part discusses individual emotions, including envy, jealousy pleasure-in-others'-misfortune, pity, compassion, anger, hate, disgust, love, sexual desire, happiness, sadness, pride, regret, and shame. The text is laced with insightful and often amusing quotations from sources ranging from Mae West to Montesquieu.

________

A little bit on the wordy side but an insightful take nevertheless. Fact of the matter flawed as that makes us humans are emotional beings oftentimes as much as they are logical. This book helps explain what we are and why we are that way

I'm reading "Can You Keep A Secret" by Sophie Kinsella at the moment.
I'm really lovin' it already. it has the same vibe of one of my fave books "Getting Over Mr. Right".
They both have that kind of unique comedy and romance and a little bit of drama kind of thing.

Nationalism and Its Logical Foundations
Amílcar Antonio Barreto

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m638/forbiddenfruit2011/9780230618640.jpg

Book Description
This book contends that there is a fundamental logic underlying the participation of non-elites in the nationalist enterprise. In order to understand this logic we must cast aside the standard myopia ingrained in most Rational Choice analysis. Those blinders restrict the realm of payoffs to the pursuit of tangible goods and incorrectly assume that all group members — elites and non-elites alike — pursue the same payoffs. We cannot understand the true nature of nationalist movements until we take into account that elite and mass strata have different motivations for supporting the same cause. There is an elite calculus and a non-elite strategy simultaneously operating under the aegis of an ethnically defined and supposedly unitary operation
___

Dry read, unlikely to pay off in the short run and time-consuming. Still had to read it for whatever reason

Bridget Jones's Diary
Helen Fielding

http://nsa27.casimages.com/img/2011/10/31/111031103700616576.jpg (http://www.casimages.com)

Bridget Jones is a single, thirty something woman living in England and working as an editor for a publishing company. She spends her life on a perpetual diet and trying to improve herself. She'd love to find a good, possibly permanent relationship. Her parents and their friends keep trying to marry her off.

This is Bridget's account of a year in her life. During this year, she expresses her New Year's resolutions for self improvement, falls in love, and watches her parents' marriage of almost 40 years fall apart. She has some close friends who help her through the good times and the bad. She laughs, sings, moans, and whines throughout the year. Her diary is the place for her to record all.

This is a light hearted, funny book. The reader can easily identify with the emotions and actions Bridget experiences. Each entry starts with the number of calories eaten for the day, alcohol units consumed, and cigarettes smoked. When they're low, she applauds herself. When they're high, she'll excuse herself. She questions herself constantly. She records her mother's new life from a grown daughter's perspective. She recounts her own love life, along with the highs and lows. Bridget is a normal, typical person for her circumstances.

This book (I understand) was originally a weekly serial in an English newspaper. I can understand how the readers looked forward to the next week's happenings. This is a fun, light read. Be prepared to laugh at Bridget and probably at yourself as well.

The Woman Who Pretended to Be Who She Was: Myths of Self-Imitation
by Wendy Doniger

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m638/forbiddenfruit2011/186295.jpg

Book Description: Many cultures have myths about self-imitation, stories about people who pretend to be someone else pretending to be them, in effect masquerading as themselves. This great theme, in literature and in life, tells us that people put on masks to discover who they really are under the masks they usually wear, so that the mask reveals rather than conceals the self beneath the self

Halfway through. So far a fascinating read

The Rapture by Tom Perrotta
Anyone who is fimiliar with the works of Tom Perrotta would find that debates regarding religious issues are a common ground for all of his themes, and yet again in his recent novel, the Rapture, Perrotta depicts the lives of five characters in their wake of what is believed, or maybe not, to be the rapture; a Christian phenomenon in which the good ones will be caught up to meet the Lord.

Of course the religious theme in the book doesn't suggest a definite and anticipated occurrence of that event, because there ain't no such a thing.

a novel I randomly picked up from Jarir ..

talks about a teenager woke up in somebody else's body .. in a house that's not his house, with a family different than his family .. in a city from a different part of England than his home town ..

and he tries to cope with this situation without telling anyone ..

it's an interesting novel for those who like mystery .. you'll learn lots of new vocabulary from it

I'm still halfway through reading it, plenty of interesting changes happened to the story

Angels and Demons is one of the most interesting novels I have read in my small library. You may be surprised if you know that it is the first novel I have read for the genius Dan Brawn and it will not be the last one. It makes me one of the biggest fans for him. I do not want to tell you the plot because I am sure you know the novel and you watch the movie, however, it has not made me feel the same feelings when I read the novel. It is a very long novel ,137 chapters, but I have not feel it is long because it is full of actions.
